Doc Coming to Springfield

Oct 24 2024

Wednesday afternoon phones jangled, and emails started flying. BIG, breaking news! Doc is coming to Springfield next week.

Doc is one of two remaining B-29s that are still airworthy and flying today. The B-29, also known as the "Superfortress," is, in some sense, the epitome of American might; it's the aircraft that effectively ended the Second World War when it dropped atomic bombs on Japan.

Today, its mission is spelled out by the organization which owns it:

Doc’s mission today is to HONOR the men and women who sacrificed so much for the freedom of others, including those who designed, built, maintained and flew the B-29 during and after WWII. CONNECT people with the rich heritage of the B-29 and allow aviation enthusiasts to experience the thrill of a B-29 up close. EDUCATE today’s and future generations on the contributions of the Greatest Generation during wartime.

Doc comes to our airport the weekend of Nov. 1-3.

Ground and cockpit tours will be available on Friday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 2 and 3, from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. both days. B-29 Doc Flight Experience rides will be available Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 2 and 3, at 9 and 11 a.m. both days. Ride flight tickets are on sale now here.

Doc will be located at the airport's general aviation complex. That's at 2801 N. General Aviation Ave , Springfield, MO.
